Mumbai massacre

Continuos rain for almost five days in Chennai; Water in streets, railway tracks, airport runways and inside the ground floor of many many houses.. This is the situation in Chennai on 27 & 28 th of Nov 08. Yet every Chennaiite followed closely what happened in Mumbai; This article is the perspective of an ordinary South Indian .

*********
On 27th Morning, we came to know about the situation in Mumbai. Heritage hotels like Taj and Trident was captured by terrorists. There was a bomb blast in a car and firing at the famous Chatrapathi sivaji railway station on the previous night….TV channels like NDTV, CNN, Times Now had a fields day; people across the country were gloomed to the TV sets. TV was showing live pictures of situation outside Taj, Trident and Nariman house.

Home Minister Shivraj Patil as usual spoke the same words, " We will take strict action against the people behind this..". Prime Minister spoke in TV and asked people to be calm.

As a citizen, I wanted to ask the following questions to the PM & his government:

Every time there is mention that some agency (like Intelligence or others) has reported in advance about the blast!! Why cant the government take preventive measures? Even in the current Mumbai massacre, fisherman is said to have written a letter to the government about some illegal activities in the Mumbai coast! What the Government has done?

In the last 6 months, blasts have happened in Jaipur (May); Bangalore (July), Ahmedabad, Delhi and I am sorry I lost the count.

How many people have been arrested so far in connection with all these blasts? Has the government collected any kind of information from them about their "Team & their leader"?

Home Minister (Now resigned) Shivraj Patil changed his suits three times for coming to media in an earlier blast; while people were dying, he wanted to project himself in different costumes !! When this was pointed to him by a reporter, he angrily said, " I always want to be clean ". He continued to be the Home Minister till several other blasts and spoke the same thing for every blast!!

After about 10 blasts in various cities, the present Home Minister has resigned!

The Mumbai terror hurts many-  more than other blasts because the earlier blasts happened in small markets, cinema halls where poor and middle class people come and died; in this terror, the rich people are affected and your government immediately show some action; Please remember even the poor and middle class people have families and their families are equally affected by their loss.

Honestly an Ordinary Indian citizen living in an urban city like me is very nervous and insecure; we are afraid anything can happen at any time.
******************************
I am really not sure what would have happened had some other political party be in power? It could have been the same situation !! That is why I personally hate Politics and Political leaders!!

The only saving grace in the whole episode is the brave action of NSG people and that of the hotel employees who sincerely tried to save all the people inside.

Normally I am a very positive person and would like to look at positive aspects of life, but the situation is very grim and I am sorry if this article sounds very negative.

My salutations to the brave soldiers and officers who died in saving their countrymen!!

When Prem and Mohan slept at the Marina Beach

After finishing our five years course in Trichy Law college, some of our friends came to Chennai for practising in High court in 1993. Lakshman, Sankar, Bala, Prem, Mohan Kumar were the few who came to Chennai from Trichy and other surrounding areas. All of us initially stayed in some relatives place or friends room.

We had our enrolment on Sep 10th 1993 and a group photo was also taken on the same day in a studio near Madras High court. (You can see this photo in our website...)

It was the first few days since we had come to Chennai. Prem and myself went to our senior Thirumagal's house in Royapettah on an evening; we had a long discussion (those days discussions were only long, never short) and had our dinner there. After coming out of their house, some how we decided to see an English film in a theatre near their house; It was a good theatre "Woodlands" and a very average English film; we saw the night show and came out of the theatre by 12.30 in the mid night. We realized then that there were no night services and we don’t have sufficient money to travel to our respective places by auto. So we walked towards beach (about 3 Kilo metres from the theatre) and decided to sleep in the lawns of the beach.

As it was September, it was very cold. While walking towards beach, Prem said, " We can get up in the morning and catch a bus to our places; you can see lot of VIP's walking in the beach tomorrow morning".. I was excited on hearing this statement!! Seeing VIP's whom we have seen on film or TV directly!! Ha!! What a great thing!!

We struggled to sleep in the open lawn on a cold night; however somehow slept for few hours in the Marina beach….

We got up early next day and walked towards the bus stand. To my surprise, I could not see any VIP's; only very few ordinary people were walking on the beach road; I scolded Prem for cheating me that we can see some VIP's next day….

Nowadays when we go to the beach, I smile on seeing the place where Prem and myself slept about 15 years ago…………

Memories from welcome function for juniors in 1990

The first big event that our class mates organised was the welcome party for the juniors. It was the year 1990 and we were studying III year then. Prem was the main co-ordinator for that function; though I had helped Prem in the future programmes, I could not do much in this function as I was not well just before the function and re-joined college barely few days before the function.

The main pre-even preparation was for Amudhan's dance in lady get up. It was for the song, "Nooru Nooru " from the film Indran Chandran. The dance preparation was initially held in Prem's cantonment house.

Oh !! That house is really memorable for many of us !! We all used to go as gangs to that house and hang out for hours together!!

I still remember the first day of practice of the dance. Sankar was initially tried in the male get up; however it did not suit him and thereafter our Junior (Arun??) was chosen. Every one was giving their opinion & ideas and it was all chaos!! There were about 15 of us and snacks were served for all of us! Many guys used to take so much liberty at Prem's house that they will go and take cool drinks straight from the refrigerator…

Just the day before the welcome function, Lakshman, Sankar and myself planned for a skit. Lakshman & Sankar had lot of reservations since it was the last minute and with almost nil preparation, how it will come through. But I was pushing them that, "Let us try". There were 2 skits. In the first skit, Lakshman acted as a junior in the college. Sankar & myself will do ragging; While ragging, we give him lot of information about the college; it was a skit full of satire ("Kindal"); in the skit we commented about many practices in the college like caste politics, Principal, faculties, girls, etc.

The second skit was a slightly different one. Sankar had the habit of speaking similar to many languages; we tried to utilize this talent; in the skit, Sankar who had studied in Trichy Law college has become a Central Minister and he comes back to the college for that function; but he forgot Tamil since he is in Delhi for some time and hence he speaks in Hindi and I translate it in Tamil. Again this is a satire about all the people in the college.

*****************

The day of welcome function arrived; there were already some infights as our seniors created some confusion; Some how those who created confusion were all managed. The simple technique used to silence some one who creates more noise is to give him some important responsibility.. For example, if the trouble maker is asked to give " Welcome address", he will keep quiet. So the people who can create more confusion will be given some time in the mike and thus they were handled.

Prem did the master of ceremony for that function. We have in our website the photo with Prem wearing a tie in that function. Our class mates Felicia, Daisy and Usha were in charge of the reception and they were dressed in north Indian style, I think (again courtesy our photoes).

There were many events but to my memory the ones that got lot of appreciation was Amudhan's dance and our skit. Amudhan danced in female costume and the guys shouted & enjoyed so happily on seeing that duet.

As regards our skit, it was received so well and the claps & sound really lifted our spirit to perform well. I remember that few college mates lifted Sankar and myself in their shoulders after the skit. Though we had done many skits in the college after that, these skits were really the ones that got more appreciation. Principal Sundar rajan also gave his appreciation by saying that he never expected such dimensions from Lakshman, Shankar and me.

This function really gave our class mates the confidence to conduct many more functions in the college in the later days.

If any of you have any memories about this function, please share the same.

Article on Lakshmanan's book release function

Lakshmanan who studied with us for 5 years died of haemophelia on Jan 7, 1997. His friends were shocked by the sudden death of this nice human being, who showed so much of love to every one he met.

His friends assembled few weeks after his death and resolved to do 2 things: First to publish the poems of Lakshmanan in a book form, which was his unfulfilled desire. The other to have his book release function along with a poem competition to be conducted across Tamil Nadu. We also decided to fund these 2 activities by way of collecting money from his friends and wellwishers.

In Chennai friends like Amudhan, Bala, Prem, Nithi, Prabhu and many others collected money. In Trichy this was done by Raj, Sathish and others while in Tanjore friends like Suresh and Sheela collected money.

Simultaneously we started collecting Lakshmanan's poems. Most of the poems were written in piece of papers, on the backside of bus tickets, etc. After collecting all the available poems, we compiled cleaner version of all the poems and circulated it to 10 people who have good taste in Tamil literature. They selected poems which they liked. With these information, I met Mr. Balusamy alias Bharathi Puthiran who was the Professor in Madras Christian College. He was known to us through Senthil Kumar who worked as reporter in "Vikatan" with Lakshmanan. Bharathi Puthiran conducted a "Kavi Arangam" every week On Friday evening in Madras Christian College. Lakshmanan and myself have participated in this on few occasions. Lakshmanan had very high regards for Bharathi Puthiran.

Those days, after office hours, I will go daily to Bharathi Puthiran's house. Bharathi Puthiran spent about 3 to 4 hours daily for 3 continuos weeks on these poems, reading it again and again, re-writing, editing, etc. I had hesitation in editing the poems of a deceased poet, but consoled myself saying that Lakshmanan had such a high regard for Bharathi Puthiran and would have accepted this had he been alive.

Everyday Bharathi Puthiran will buy some Non vegetarian for dinner since I was a guest. I was embarassed so much that the task of compiling Lakshmanan's poems itself was a big help and why was he stressing his family also for me. Without hearing to my murmurings on this, Bharathi Puthiran will take me in his bicycle every day night around 10.30 to drop at Tambaram Railway station. I used to return home with a very tender feeling thinking that people like Bharathi Puthiran also live in this world.

Lakshmanan had written a poem about his guilty feeling on returning late to home every day. Bharathi Puthiran named this poem as "Veedu thirumbal" and also gave the same title to the book. I think "Veedu thirumbal" in Tamil also refers to a life after death; in a way it was an apt title. We, friends were doing a thing which made Lakshmanan to live through his writing after his death.

Apart from Bharathi Puthiran, there were many others who helped for this cause. Prem printed the book in his press and took lot of pain in proof reading, cover sheet, etc. We got exceptional review for the book from Writer Sujatha and Poet Kalyanji. We got the cover sheet drawing by Painter Athimoolam and Lakshmanan' face drawing from Painter Visvam. All these four were really stalwarts in their fields and we were so fortunate to get their contribution for the book. (Of these four, Sujatha & Athimoolam passed away recently).

Mr. Kavitha Barathi who was the Assistant Director of Bharathi Raja then, selected the best three poems in the Poem competition conducted by us across Tamil Nadu.
All the literary people that we associated for this cause were so simple and willing to help immediately; in fact none of them collected any money from us. Even when we asked, they refused saying that they don’t want to be paid for this noble cause.

The function was held 6 months after Lakshmanan's demise at a hall near Madras High Court. The hall was filled with the friends of Lakshmanan who had come from all over Tamil Nadu. Lakshmanan's parents and relatives had also come.

The first copy of the book was released by Writer Prabanjan and was received by Advocate Arulmozhi. Lakshmanan's friends spoke recollecting the qualities of him and many incidents involving him. Prabanjan, Bharathi Puthiran, Viswam, Advocate Senthil Nathan ,Arulmozhi and many others spoke in an emotional manner.

Many copies of the books were sold even before the function was completed. Writer Sujatha had written about this function and quoted some of Lakshmanan's poem in the Tamil book "Kungumam". Vikatan book also published a long poem of him for 2 pages and mentioned about our effort in an article. Even today there are people whom I meet recollect poems from this book.

1988-93 Trichy law college batch has done many useful things in life, but this book release function should be one of the best.

I feel anyone who has a flair for writing shall publish a book in his lifetime. This is one of the way to live even after death.

We still conduct an oratorical competition and a singing competition every year in the month of June/ July on the eve of Lakshmanan's birthday in a Blind school in Adyar.

Another June month has come and preparations are on for another function. Lakshmanan still live after death through our actions………………...

A beginning

Friends,

Thanks for visiting this blog. Let this be a good day for you and your loved ones.

I have started a new blog, as some of the friends asked to publish the content in English, as they had difficulty in reading my Tamil blog "Veedu thirumbal".

Our friend Lakshmanan's birthday falls on June 17th and I have translated and published the article written in Tamil earlier. Please do read and post your comments either here or by e mail.

Thanks again...
